Look Ma, I’m published!

You’d think I might have mentioned earlier that I was going to be a published author. Having my writing published has been a goal of mine for a couple years now. I guess I neglected to let you know because I never imagined I’d write a chapter for a book called Age of Conversation 2: Why Don't They Get It? After all, this isn’t a marketing blog and I’ve never been one to write much about my line of work. Which is marketing, by the way -- although I prefer to be called a communication agent.

There is another reason I never brought up AOC2, as the cool kids call it. Since there was no application or selection process to be a part of this project, I honestly never felt it was much of an achievement. I only participated in response to being called out on a friend’s blog, and almost ended up not doing it at all.

From the start, the title of the book put me off. Specifically, this: “Why don't they get it?” I never understood who “they” were and what exactly “it” is they aren’t getting. It all seemed too vague and negative for my taste. I’ve grown tired of reading blogs written by or for marketers that are nothing more than a place to tear down the work of others. I’m sick of the know-it-all attitude I come across frequently in the blogosphere.

But in the end, I decided to challenge myself and write about something positive while trying to stay relevant. In hindsight, I am glad I participated in AOC2. It feels good to be part of a large collaborative project with such positive energy behind it. Even though I was initially leery of the message this book might send, I think it’s a good thing. I’ve perused many authors’ blogs and have not been disappointed by what I’ve read so far. I look forward to reading their chapters. I was wrong in thinking this wouldn’t be much of an achievement. It takes guts to speak up and be open to criticism. It takes passion and commitment to be part of the conversation. I congratulate my fellow authors who decided not to sit on the sidelines, as I was tempted to do:
